Spring is just around the corner! A time for rebirth, reawakening and regrowth! How appropriate that the March birthstone is Aquamarine, a soft blue-green stone that evokes a subtle warmth and serenity.
The name aquamarine literally means “sea water”, and historically it was believed to protect sailors on their voyages and cool the temper. In Medieval times, many believed that simply wearing the stone could protect one from poisoning. Ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, and Hebrew warriors wore aquamarine out into battle, believing it would help them be victorious. Others believed that aquamarine could reawaken love between a couple.
Aquamarine can be found in Brazil, Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Vietnam. It grows in hexagonal prismatic crystals, and sometimes can be over a foot long! Most cut aquamarine stones are eye-clean, meaning they have no visible inclusions or imperfections. Aquamarine is a form of the mineral Beryl, and gets its blue-green color from the presence of iron ions. Like diamonds, the quality of an aquamarine stone can be determined by looking at the 4C’s. When faceted, aquamarine’s transparent luster really shines!
Aquamarine is a beautiful stone for all occasions. Its cool, tranquil color will compliment any skin tone this spring. Give aquamarine to your loved one to communicate affection and celebrate or rekindle love. If you know anyone with a March birthday, this stone would make an excellent gift!
